Tachiyomi Failed to Bypass Cloudflare | Here Is How to Actually Fix It

You open Tachiyomi, tap your favorite source, and get hit with “Java.lang.Exception: Failed to bypass Cloudflare.” The manga does not load. Nothing works. You have already tried restarting the app and it made zero difference. Don’t worry I will guide you step by step it will hardly take 2-3 minutes to fix it.

Here is what is actually happening and how to fix it properly.

What This Error Actually Means

Cloudflare sits in front of manga websites to block bots and suspicious traffic. When Tachiyomi tries to fetch manga from a source, Cloudflare sees it as automated traffic and blocks the request. The error shows up when Tachiyomi cannot get past that block, either because the app is outdated, your cookies are bad, your IP got blocked or the source itself upgraded its Cloudflare settings recently.

Fix 1 -> Open in WebView First

This is the fastest fix and works for most people. When you see the error, tap “Open in WebView” right below the error message. A browser like screen opens. Wait for it to load fully, sometimes a CAPTCHA appears, complete it. Once the page loads, go back to Tachiyomi and try the source again. WebView stores the correct Cloudflare cookie that Tachiyomi needs to access the source.

If WebView keeps looping and never loads you can try Fix 2.

Fix 2 -> Change Your User Agent

Cloudflare blocks Tachiyomi because its request headers do not look like a real browser. Changing the user agent fixes this by making Tachiyomi look like Chrome or Firefox.

Go to Settings -> Advanced -> Default User Agent String. Open Chrome on your phone, go to (chrome://version) copy the User Agent shown there, and paste it into Tachiyomi. Save and restart the app.

This fix was specifically recommended by the official Tachiyomi troubleshooting team for sources where WebView loops endlessly.

Fix 3 -> Clear Cache and Cookies

Corrupted cache is one of the most common causes. Go to Settings -> Apps -> Tachiyomi -> Storage -> Clear Cache. Then inside the app go to Settings -> Advanced -> Clear Cookies. Restart the app and try again.

Do both, clearing only cache without cookies often does not fully solve it.

Fix 4 -> Update the Extension

Cloudflare updates its detection constantly. Extension developers push fixes when this happens. If your extension is even one version behind, it may be using an old bypass method that Cloudflare already updated.

Go to Browse -> Extensions and check for updates. If an update is available, install it and test the source immediately.

Fix 5 -> Turn Off VPN or Switch Networks

If you are using VPN and it is turned on, turn it off. Cloudflare blocks VPN IPs heavily because many bots use them. Your IP reputation drops the moment you use a shared VPN server that thousands of other people have used.

If you do not have a VPN, switch from WiFi to mobile data or vice versa. A fresh IP address is sometimes all it takes to get past the Cloudflare block.

Fix 6 -> Switch to Mihon

Tachiyomi is no longer actively maintained. Think of Mihon as the updated, community driven version of Tachiyomi. After Tachiyomi stopped getting proper updates, the community picked it up and kept improving it.

The biggest difference you will notice is that Mihon just works better with most sources. A lot of sites that fail to load on Tachiyomi open fine on Mihon. That’s mainly because Mihon uses a more up-to-date WebView, so it can handle things like Cloudflare protection much more smoothly.

If you are still on Tachiyomi and getting this “failed to bypass cloudflare tachiyomi” error repeatedly across multiple sources, switching to Mihon is the permanent fix.

When Nothing Works

If all fixes above fail on a specific source, the source itself has set Cloudflare to maximum protection mode. No app can bypass that reliably. Either wait for the extension developer to push an update or switch to a different source that carries the same manga.

Check the Tachiyomi Discord or subreddit, when a popular source goes strict on Cloudflare, someone always posts a working alternative within hours.

FAQ

Why does this error only happen on some sources and not others?
Each source sets its own Cloudflare protection level. Some sites use basic protection, others use strict bot filtering. The stricter the site, the harder it is for Tachiyomi to get through.

Does clearing data delete my library?
Clear Cache only that is safe. Do not tap Clear Data unless you have a backup. Clear Data removes your entire library and settings.

Will using a VPN help?
Usually no. Most VPN IPs are already blocked by Cloudflare. Turn it off first and test without it.

Is this error fixed in Mihon?
Mihon handles Cloudflare better than the original Tachiyomi because it gets active updates. It is not a guaranteed fix for every source but it resolves the error on most sources where Tachiyomi fails.
